How To Do Knockdown Ceiling
A knockdown ceiling is a type of ceiling that has a textured finish. It is made by spraying a mixture of drywall mud and water onto the ceiling and then using a knife or trowel to knock down the peaks of the texture. This creates a uniform, slightly rough surface that can help to hide imperfections in the ceiling. Knockdown ceilings are relatively easy to install and can be a great way to add interest to a room.
Materials You Will Need
- Drywall mud
- Water
- Airless sprayer
- Knife or trowel
- Bucket
- Stirring stick
- Drop cloths
Instructions
- Prepare the ceiling. Remove any furniture or other objects from the room. Cover the floor and any other surfaces that you do not want to get mud on with drop cloths.
- Mix the drywall mud. In a bucket, combine 1 part drywall mud with 2 parts water. Stir until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
- Load the airless sprayer. Fill the hopper of the airless sprayer with the drywall mud mixture.
- Spray the ceiling. Hold the airless sprayer perpendicular to the ceiling and about 12 inches away. Spray the mud in a thin, even coat.
- Knock down the texture. Immediately after spraying the mud, use a knife or trowel to knock down the peaks of the texture. Hold the knife or trowel at a 45-degree angle to the ceiling and move it in a circular motion.
- Allow the ceiling to dry. The knockdown ceiling will take several hours to dry. Once it is dry, you can remove the drop cloths and replace the furniture and other objects in the room.
Tips
- If you are new to knockdown ceilings, it is a good idea to practice on a small area before tackling the entire ceiling.
- Use a light touch when knocking down the texture. If you press too hard, you will remove too much of the mud and create a flat surface.
- Knockdown ceilings can be painted any color. However, it is important to use a paint that is specifically designed for textured surfaces.
- Knockdown ceilings are a great way to add interest to a room. They can also help to hide imperfections in the ceiling.
